Everyone should have HIV test twice a year, says Johansson

While most people have a dental check-up every six months, Scarlett Johansson has revealed that she has two HIV tests a year. She said it was "part of being a decent human to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases".

The highly unusual disclosure by a Hollywood actress "? who was recently described by Woody Allen as "sexually overwhelming" "? was welcomed by sexual health campaigners in Britain.

They said she was the ideal person to "reduce the stigma" that surrounded STDs.

Miss Johansson, 21, told Allure magazine: "Contrary to popular belief, I'm not promiscuous. There does seem to be a mistaken belief out there that I am sexually available somehow "? which is not to say that I'm not open-minded about sex."

The actress, voted by Esquire magazine this month as the "sexiest woman alive", said monogamy might not be natural but was worth striving for in a relationship.

"I do think on some basic level we are animals and by instinct we kind of breed accordingly. But, as much as I believe that, I work really hard when I'm in a relationship to make it work in a monogamous way.

"I get tested for HIV twice a year. . . One has to be socially aware. It's part of being a decent human to be tested for STDs. It's just disgusting behaviour when people don't. It's so irresponsible."

Miss Johansson, who describes herself as normal and grounded, is well-known as politically active and liberal-minded and lends her support to various causes.

Rebecca Findlay, a spokesman for the Family Planning Association, said it was admirable for an actress of her stature to talk about HIV tests.

In the past decade, cases of gonorrhoea and HIV have more than doubled, cases of syphillis are up by 1,500 per cent and the number of sexually active people under 25 with chlamydia is thought to be around half a million.

Talk about talkin out of both sides of your mouth at the same time. Why would she need to be tested so often if she isn't fairly promiscuos.

she's a role model to a lot of young girls, etc, who may be very sexually active. They see her as going and getting tested on a regular basis, might make them do the same.
But yeah, 2 times a year is quit a bit, if she's not all that sexually active..haha

Doesn't require that much sexually active, and shoot, someone she could have been with might have something and not know it themselves.

It does seem a bit much to me, but I guess that way she finds out quicker and doesn't potentially pass it on?

It can take 6 months or longer after infection for HIV to show in bloodwork.

The STD testing is a good thing. But I am inclined to disagree with the above quote.

I have to agree as well. Probably the same people that said Reese Witherspoon was the sexiest woman alive a few year back.
